Early in his law enforcement career, Dave became aware of the Computer Forensic Unit within his agency and immediately knew that he wanted to transition to that unit.\u00a0 Unsure of how to get started, he signed up for digital forensics courses in his area to learn more about the field. At his first class, Dave met Eric Oldenburg, who was already a Computer Forensic Examiner in the very unit that Dave wanted to join.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Eric became a mentor for Dave, facilitated long-term shadows with him and the unit, and ultimately advocated for Dave when a position opened in the unit.\u00a0 This example of mentorship really made an impact on Dave, inspiring him to look for opportunities to give back to the community and to support other forensic examiners with their goals and careers.\u00a0 Dave attended BCFE and earned his CFCE in 2012.\u00a0 He immediately jumped in to serve as a peer review coach the following year.<\/p>\n
Aside from his work as a police detective in Phoenix, Dave creates free software for digital forensic examiners that he releases under his business, Breakpoint Forensics (breakpointforensics.com).\u00a0 When not working, he enjoys a busy life with his wife and their five children (ages 1 to 17), including a girl whom they fostered since she was 4 days old.\u00a0 Having a love for the outdoors and hunting, the family likes to camp in the middle of nowhere for a week. Dave is also an avid mountain biker and hits the trails to recharge his batteries.<\/p>\n
